I had the good fortune to take a subject on pyschodermatology during my training in Egypt. I had a module introduction . Although I found it to be incredibly fascinating, I never considered making it a unique aspect of my practice until I began consulting patients who had various skin disorders and mental health issues. I now view skin conditions differently as a result of this. It is indeed a very important subspeciality of dermatology that needs attention.

Having been diagnosed with Discoid Lupus at the age of fifteen, and having a sister diagnosed with severe Systemic Lupus nine years later, in a family where my father had gone from internal medicine to psychiatry with specialties in cardiology and gastroenterology as well as having spent a year in neurology, I am well placed to understand the importance of good all round medical knowledge and understanding of the interplay of various factors which affect the skin and mind and how individualized attention is crucial in order to thrive despite most challenging disorders with the help of compassionate doctors and professionals who are well educated and formed. This is why I truly believe that the psychodermatological approach is essential for certain patients.
